C4AC #2 – Social Networking

We’ve all joined the social networking bandwagon for one reason or another. Whether you use it for work and promote your business and or for personal use by following your favourite celebs, news media, keep in touch with friends or looking at ways to grow your social circle and of course promote your blog/website or a favourite cause.
But some people are taking social networking sites way to seriously like when twitter gets the famous fail whale to appear. Sure everyone and their unborn child to their own pets have accounts on all the social networking sites (which I never understood why?). Each day the number of people using these sites grows, all thanks to the media blasting about it daily. But it doesn’t mean you have to get all antsy when the site is down. It’s called get up and do something useful until their problem is fixed like wash the dishes or better yet get back to work. (You’re not being paid to play online).
Last night all over twitter there was a lot of bashing going on which was uncalled for. I personally don’t care what a celeb is doing nor would I want to follow anyone who gets people to help them increase their follower account. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again a lot of people are using these social networking sites as a popularly contest instead of interacting with their followers. If I ever reach say close to 200 following/followers cool if not it’s not a big deal to me.
For me twitter is another tool for me to connect with fellow dragon boaters, fellow bloggers and meet other locals. However if you have noticed I do not promote my myspace or facebook info on here as I personally like keeping some of my life out of the public view. It also works from keeping some people I went to school with or family (yet my family all know I have a website) away from here. Double life as it may, some things I find I’d rather keep private.
Talking to some people yesterday over lunch, who don’t want to join the social networking craze because the more they hear about this craze the more annoyed they get as it’s so in your face. So am I for that matter, if I want to follow you I will you, the more media mention that they are on twitter the more, I don’t want to follow them or listen to them on the radio or watch their show.
Social Networking is great however it doesn’t work well when people keep pushing info down other people throats.
Personally I do think there should be some better guidelines for twitter:
- If you haven’t updated in 6 months, the account should be deleted
- You can’t follow more then 500 people within the first month of joining
- Can’t follow anyone or be followed by anyone if you have follow 10 people and have 100,000 followers. It should be follow 500 be followed by 700 people or something like that. A better ratio then 10 to 100,000.
- Or have away to block out certain words for a day or forever, example if you couldn’t watch a game or tv show until later (and your recording it) and still want to be connected to twitter without being spoiled with either the score or the plot.

I love your suggestions. But at the same time, with the following/being followed ratio… What if someone has a 100k followers, but they don’t -want- to follow everyone because they don’t care about the couple hundred spam accounts? But not being able to follow 500 in the first month is a good idea, and definitely being able to block out words.
I didn’t notice any bashing, then again I wasn’t home to be glued to my computer.
I see Twitter being mentioned in the news all the time now. What politicians are doing on Twitter, CEOs, celebrities, etc. Annoys the hell out of me.

I totally agree with you and your thoughts but I like twitter as is… there are so many rules in everything else we do that I kinda like the wild west of twitter.
I’m the same as you… I don’t respect people who are out for a popularity contest on twitter and I stop following those who tweet about blowing their noses, but it’s all my choice… if 3000 people want to hear what one person has to say while that person doesn’t follow back b/c it’s a work twitter then why not?
I follow celebrities, a bunch of them actually. Ashton, Demi, a few NKTOB members, as well as a few others, along with locals, and fellow blogger friends. My main thing against twitter is those who only tweet negative thoughts and ideas … I am down with #followfriday, and #unfollowfriday
ha ha….
I am also like you, I have two lives. One online and one offline. My facebook is friends only, and my blog is obviously public and so is my twitter. Just be careful and aware of your online presence. You dont want somethiing yous aid online to come back and bite you in the ass.

Now social networking sites are going to be saturated with people who have just discovered twitter and other sites. I had to set my uncle up with his twitter account and he has no clue how to use it. I hope you do well with the comments. I’m raising money for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer and need help with comments too http://www.benspark.com/being-responsible.html I’m also giving away an 16GB iPod Touch

Those are interesting points. I only JUST got more followers than people I follow, so I’m about to go through the list and weed out people I think might be spam. *dons anti-spam hat*
As a recent adult grad, social media, and particularly Twitter, has allowed me to connect easily with people in my new industry. Networking wasn’t something that I grew up doing, so I followed someone’s advice and just did it.
I love the learning aspects of it. Everyday, thought leaders in numerous industries are putting out valuable information. It’s my goal to get to a point where I can reciprocate. Can I interact with all of them? No, but I never know when i’ll come across something and engage. This site for instance, what a great way to give back! Thanks!
“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again a lot of people are using these social networking sites as a popularly contest instead of interacting with their followers.”
Very well said, and quite true. I’ve actually deleted a bunch of people from my myspace, twitter, etc, due to those very reasons. “Oh my god why am I not #1X on your page?!” it’s not about status, but interaction, which clearly a lot of people lack.
I was just thinking yesterday that if it were not for the Canucks, what would I be using twitter for? Almost my entire follow list on twitter are Canucks fans and all I ever seem to talk about is the team. ZOMG! What am I going to do?

I agree with most of what you said. It makes sense. Twitter can become quite irritating. I tend to not use it as much as other people do.
