Social Networking and Personal Branding go hand in hand which most people have forgotten about these days. Everyone thinks its all about online persona but it’s not.
Personal Branding is another way of saying how do you present and carry yourself with your attitude, appearance. Just like in a job interview and or on that 1st date with someone. How you present yourself in person should be more important then how many rss readers you have or how many comments your blog gets per day.
People are using the web (facebook, myspace, twitter) to market themselves and or their company. Even those of us who are using the web for personal enjoyments (aka hobby) we still need to head smart on what get posted online. As we’ve all been told over the years that what you post online CAN bite you back in the ass hard later on. You don’t want to be fired from your job just because you wrote “I’m bored” on twitter or on facebook when you should be working and your boss also follows you.
There are some almost 19 years old on my facebook account (former kids I coached) who have pictures of them drinking and list their place of work. Two of them also started doing the webcam poses in small clothing on personal website. They get a lot of hits from what I hear but its the wrong kind of attention they are getting I’m worried about… I just want to shake some scene into them, I would call the parents BUT I don’t have their phone numbers anymore.
It boggles my mind people would do something like that just to get noticed. It might get you popular and known online but is it worth it?
What you do/say online can also brand you for whole online life.

Hi There! Welcome to Paddling-Geek.Net (PGN for short).

Eh, having a blog and doing public things such as twittering, can bite me in the ass despite any attempts to not have it done. Such as a blog entry I wrote about my feelings on my family situation, that someone misread and got butt hurt about. I tend not to post things like “Oh my god i got so wasted!” or post provocative photos. Maybe it’s just a personal preference. Anything too personal gets locked and thrown in a protected post.
I’ve never understood the skimpy clothing and posting it online all over. Sure it gets you attention, but it’s usually not the kind you’re going to want later in life. It’s kinda like something Jeremy told me about one of his ex’s that told him she slept with a random guy at a party. He could only respond with, “What he tapped your forehead and you hit your back with your legs open? Who does that?”. I mean, seriously, do you want to be thought up as that type of girl?
It’s funny but I think that when I post something online of my kids that it’s cute today but how will it be seen in 20 years from now or even 100 years when my kids kids might see it.
Funny how you can affect the future by saving something out to the public.

I agree with Dez’s comments above. Some people dont realize just how small the interwebs really are. Someone will recognize you, and it can come back and bite you in the ass later on in life. For example that politician who was up for the local election, he had to withdraw from the running because pictures of him and some women were found on facebook, and he’s grabbing at her.
I was raised with knowing to be aware of what I put online. Anyways… You have another comment!!!
Aidan’s last blog post..Happy Earth Day!
I am always careful about the things I put online. Most of the time, I feel I have nothing to hide which I really don’t but I have a habit of letting emotions get the best of me sometimes.
Caity’s last blog post..Surprise!!
I’d like to think I’m careful with everything I put online, but in reality I’m likely not. That being said, I accept responsibility for does get into the world wide web. You won’t catch me casting blame as it’s not like anyone held a gun to my head to make me do it in the first place.
